Cleaning, inspection, repair, or replacement

A few observations can help without opening the plumbing or risking more water on the floor.

- Check for a kinked or dislodged drain hose. Follow the washer manual if you inspect or clean the appliance’s pump filter.
- Keep hands and powered tools out of standing water. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into the standpipe or run a drain snake into it.
- Note which cycle causes the problem and whether a utility sink, floor drain, toilet, or shower is slow at the same time.
If sewage appears or several fixtures back up, stop using the affected fixtures and call for plumbing service.
What happens during the visit

At the home, the plumber checks the plumbing side of the setup and traces the likely source of the backup or leak. If the washer itself is the problem, the plumber can explain why an appliance technician is the better next call.

Is the standpipe the same as the washer drain hose?
No. The flexible drain hose is part of the washing machine. It empties into the standpipe, which is part of the home’s plumbing and connects to the drain system.
