Water doesn’t care about your landscaping budget. It doesn’t care about the nice mulch you just laid down or the fact that your basement finally looks decent after the renovation. It finds the low spots, it finds the cracks, and over time it wins. If there’s a corner of your yard that turns into a swamp every time it rains, or a damp smell in the crawl space that shows up like clockwork in spring, that’s not bad luck. That’s a drainage problem, and it’s not going away on its own.
A French drain is one of those solutions that sounds fancier than it is. It works, it’s been around forever, and when it’s done properly, you basically forget it exists because the water problem disappears with it.
What Is a French Drain, Really?
At its core, it’s a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe running through it. Water seeps in through the gravel, enters the pipe, and gets carried away from wherever you don’t want it — a dry well, a storm drain, a lower section of the property. It’s also sometimes called a weeping tile system or a trench drain, depending on who you’re talking to.
The physics are almost embarrassingly simple. Water takes the easiest path available. Gravel gives it one. The pipe moves it along. That’s the whole concept.
How Do You Know If You Actually Need One?
Wet grass isn’t automatically a drainage emergency. But there are situations where a French drain stops being optional:
- Foundation-level puddles that reappear after every rainfall
- Lawn that stays waterlogged for three or four days straight
- Moisture or seepage inside a basement or crawl space
- Visible erosion paths cutting through the yard
Here’s the thing most people don’t think about until it’s too late — standing water near a foundation isn’t just a cosmetic annoyance. It works on the structure slowly, quietly, and the repair bill when something finally gives can be brutal. Foundation work easily runs into the tens of thousands. A French drain costs somewhere between $10 and $50 per linear foot depending on depth, soil conditions, and who’s doing the work. That gap in cost is enormous, and it’s worth keeping in mind before deciding to “just deal with it” for another season.
Plan Before You Pick Up a Shovel
Seriously. The planning stage is where most DIY drainage projects go sideways — not the digging itself.
The trench needs a consistent downward grade of at least 1%, which works out to a 1-inch drop for every 8 feet of run. That sounds like a minor detail but it isn’t. Too flat, and water just sits in the pipe doing nothing. Too steep, and you’re trading one erosion problem for another at the outlet.
Call 811 before you touch the ground. It’s the national utility locating service, it’s free, and in most states it’s actually required by law. They’ll mark gas lines, water mains, electrical conduits — everything you’d rather not hit with a trenching spade. People skip this step constantly, and sometimes they regret it in a very serious way.
Depth depends on what you’re trying to fix. Yard drainage generally calls for 18 to 24 inches. Foundation protection can require 4 to 6 feet, sometimes more. The Materials Are Not Where You Cut Corners
A poorly specified drain is almost worse than no drain — it gives you false confidence until it fails.
Use 4-inch HDPE perforated pipe. It handles root pressure, it flexes without cracking, and it holds up underground for decades when installed correctly. The cheap corrugated stuff looks similar but collapses under soil load over time. Not worth the savings.
Aggregate should be clean, washed ¾-inch crushed stone — angular, not rounded. Pea gravel is popular because it looks tidy, but it shifts and migrates in ways that compromise the void space you need for drainage. Angular stone locks together and moves water faster.
Geotextile landscape fabric is what holds the whole system together long-term. It wraps around the gravel and keeps fine soil particles from slowly infiltrating and silting up the pipe. Without it, the drain works great for a few years and then gradually stops doing anything at all.
How the Installation Actually Comes Together
The sequence matters here. Skipping steps or doing them out of order creates problems that are genuinely annoying to fix after the fact:
- Trench dug to proper depth and grade
- Landscape fabric laid with generous side overlap
- 2-inch gravel base installed first
- Perforated pipe placed and connected
- Gravel backfill added, fabric folded over the top
- Final cover of topsoil or stone
Pipe joints deserve more attention than most guides give them. Don’t just push sections together and hope for the best — use proper couplings, and wrap the joints in extra filter fabric. Sediment gets into those connection points and causes blockages that are a pain to locate and clear.
Mistakes That Seem Minor Until They Aren’t
These come up over and over, even on projects done by people who knew what they were doing:
- Outlet draining toward neighboring property
- Sections with flat or reversed slope trapping water
- No animal guard on the outlet end
That last one sounds like a small thing. It isn’t. Rodents find drainage pipes immediately, nest inside them, and the resulting blockage is both disgusting and difficult to fix. A basic grate cover at the outlet costs almost nothing and solves the problem entirely.
Knowing When to Hand It Off
Some jobs are genuinely worth doing yourself. Some aren’t. Heavy clay soil, a high water table, or anything close to the foundation of a building changes the complexity significantly — clay holds water instead of letting it pass through, which means deeper trenches, more engineered outlets, and usually a lot more gravel than you initially planned for.
A French drain done right — by you or by someone you hire — quietly does its job for years without you thinking about it. Get the slope right, don’t skimp on the fabric, and seal that outlet. Water is patient. A well-built drainage system is more patient.
